Our Program
Our Goals at
St. Thomas Christian Academy are:
 |
To provide opportunities for
spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth for each
student.
|
 |
To academically challenge and
nurture the varied talents and abilities of each
student.
|
 |
To foster a learning environment
that incorporates the Christian values of tolerance, forgiveness, respect,
and community involvement.
|
 |
To encourage the spiritual growth
of each child.
|
 | To promote a feeling of importance,
accomplishment, confidence, and self-esteem in each
child.
|
Academic Achievement
Grades 1-8 are tested annually using
standardized achievement tests. Each year, St. Thomas
students win honors in local, regional, and national
programs.
Parent/Guardian Involvement
We believe parents/guardians are interested in and should be involved in their child's
school experience. One conference is scheduled each year, although it is encouraged
to confer whenever there is a concern. Parents and guardians are also welcome
to help in the school, participate in the PTO, and share
special skills.
Nursery & Pre-Kindergarten
Nursery classes are offered for children who attain age three by October 1.
Pre-Kindergarten classes are offered for children who are four by October 1. Our Nursery & Pre-Kindergarten
program is approved and licensed by the State of New
Jersey. Students may attend 2, 3, or 5 half-day or full-day sessions. Each class has a teacher and an aide with at least
one adult for every 10 children.
In the Nursery & Pre-Kindergarten program,
emphasis is placed on learning to live together and explore
the world through play, the senses, art, music, and
language. The academic program focuses on motor development,
familiarization with the alphabet, phonics, reading
readiness, and beginning mathematics.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten classes are offered for children who attain age
five by October 1. Students may attend either half-day or full-day 5 days a
week. Each class has both a teacher and an aide.
The Kindergarten students concentrate on writing
their letters, phonics, sight words, science, and
mathematics.
Primary Grades
Primary grade students follow a language program
that stresses verbal language development, phonetic skills,
writing, and literature. The math program helps children
discover and apply mathematical principles, as well as
arithmetic skills. Social studies and science are also
strong parts of this curriculum.
Upper Grades
Upper grade students
participate in a language
program that consists of creative and essay writing, research
skills, and classical literature. In math, number theory,
problem solving, and introductory algebra are taught. The
students also have classes in history, civics, geography,
earth science, and life science.
All Grades
Religion is taught at
all grade levels. The curriculum is non-denominational in
nature and allows for children of all Christian faiths to
participate.
In addition to the core curriculum,
each student takes special classes in music, physical
education, art, health, and computer technology. Spanish is taught to
Grades K-8. Computer technology is taught in a computer lab where students are instructed in basic computer
hardware skills, Microsoft Office software products, and various other
learning software programs. St. Thomas Christian Academy has
Internet access,
which provides students with additional resources for research projects,
advanced learning, and remediation.
